Ross Gillette, PhD

Research Scientist II | Study Director

Consultant

Email:

I am a Development and Reproductive Toxicologist (DART) and Study Director at Charles River Laboratories and I am a consultant specialized in sequencing and bioinformatics, experimental design and optimization, and medical device validation. My formal training includes Pharmacology/Toxicology, Molecular Biology, and Bioinformatics. My past work has focused on understanding the ways in which toxic exposures and traumatic experience affect development and reproduction and how these life events can be inherited by and change our future generations. My training is truly multidisciplinary and spans bioinformatics, molecular and reproductive biology, epigenetics, toxicology, endocrinology, and animal behavior.

Personal Summary

I grew up in a small town on the Texas-Mexico border and was raised by parents that were  public educators and encouraged academic pursuits. In 2005, I attended UT Austin working towards a B.S. in Biology and a B.S. in Psychology. I began formal research in 2007 for which I received two undergraduate research fellowships. I graduated with special honors in 2009 and wrote a thesis on how the female reproductive system ages and how the brain contributes to the onset of senescence (menopause).

After graduating, I joined the laboratory of Dr. David Crews as a Research Engineer and Project Manager. I completed a two year project to determine if it were possible that chemical exposure could change the behavior of great-great grandchildren who were never themselves exposed. In 2011, I joined Dr. Crews' lab as graduate student with a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation to continue this research and I completed a dissertation on the changes to the brain, behavior, and the reproductive system caused by chemical exposures and how those changes are passed from generation to generation.

After graduate school, I joined Dr. John Richburg's laboratory for a brief Postdoctoral Fellowship where I determined how plastics can cause toxicity in the male reproductive system and how the immune system manages damage and repair. I then joined the laboratory of Dr. Andrea Gore with a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the PhRMA foundation to determine how harmful experiences, like trauma, or toxic exposures, can fundamentally change our children, for the better or worse.

I recently made the transition from academia to industry. I am currently a Study Director at Charles River Laboratories. I lead non-clinical safety studies for Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology programs to ensure drugs and chemicals currently in development are safe for us to use. I have not fully left academia behind. I continue to write and publish scientific papers, analyze data, and provide consulting services for academia, industry, and federal research and development programs.
